Hey Learner! Are you one of those people who think Marketing is all about Selling? Marketing is all about convincing people about something? And that is all there in marketing?

Today, I want you to know the marketing essentials in easy steps.

In this article, I am going to talk about what are essentials present in marketing. We will talk about the 6 essentials to know in marketing. This article will be useful for students, beginners, marketers, and entrepreneurs.

1. The fundamentals of marketing

In simplest terms, marketing is the delivery of customer satisfaction at a profit. Marketing is about sending the right message, to the right person, at the right time. The purpose of marketing is to build a brand and capture a position in the minds of the consumers.

Marketing is not just about selling. It is also about keeping an existing customer happy by communicating with them so that they can remain a customer for life.

Marketing is based on science. Marketing starts before creating the product. It starts with understanding the customer and customer’s needs that leads to creating a product that fits.

“The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits him and sells itself… The aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous.” — Peter Drucker

Marketing is a game of perceptions. Actually, the product is rooted or important in reality. So never let marketing become more important than the product.

A great product sells itself. A great product converts your customers into brand ambassadors. Word of mouth marketing is the best channel of marketing ever. Advertising, Copywriting, Sales are some of the components of marketing.

2. Importance of Communication Skills in Marketing

It’s no secret that communication is an essential part of every successful business. So good marketing is all about good communication. Good communication doesn’t mean sophisticated English. Good communication doesn’t care about vocabulary or grammar. What is more important is, Am I able to transfer my thoughts to you effectively is the only question to ask.

To understand the target audience in a better way, the marketer or the person should write like he is talking to him. Writing slows down the thought process and gives clarity. To improve communication skills, some of the ways are important and those are:

  • Write as you talk. Join the conversation in people’s minds.
  • Write a lot. The more you write, the better you can write (and also speak).
  • Watch stand up comedy shows and sitcoms.
  • Think in English.
  • Hear a lot, Practice and interact with others.

3. Digital Marketing vs. Traditional Marketing

The main difference between digital and traditional marketing is the medium through which an audience encounters a marketing message. While traditional marketing uses traditional media like magazines and newspapers, digital marketing uses digital media, such as social media or websites.

  • If a product is generic with a very wide targeting TV Ads can reach millions at a low cost. (Ex: smartphones- Apple iPhone)
  • India has TVs in 197 million homes out of 298 million homes. With an average of 4–5 members per household, TV has a reach of 800 million to 1 billion people. The reach of Digital Marketing is nowhere close to TV based on numbers alone. (Source: Wikipedia)
  • Digital Marketing is the best medium to reach the affluent English Speaking population in India with spending power ~ 100 Million Users.
  • Radio has a reach of 65% of the Indian population. (Source: Financial Express)
  • The newspaper has a reach of 465 Million people. (Source: Business Standard)

4. CATT Marketing Funnel

Wealth = n ^ CATT

  • [n] Niche: Your success and wealth depend on the niche you choose.
  • [C] Content: Create useful content that attracts people from your niche. Blog posts, videos, lead magnets, live webinars, etc.

  • [T] Trust: Build trust with your audience with tripwires, marketing automation and retargeting.
  • [T] Transaction: Convert your leads into customers with natural sales methods.

5. Integrated Digital Marketing

Integrated digital marketing is a method of engaging customers and prospects with your company or brand that combines all parts of marketing communications to work together and assist the customer along their journey of awareness to loyalty and advocacy.

In simple words, Integrated digital marketing is, as it sounds, the integration of multiple marketing strategies to form a cohesive online approach for your business.

Here’s what it typically entails:

  • Email Marketing: A tried and still the true method of connecting with your market. If used appropriately, email marketing keeps your brand top of mind and provides valuable information to your target market.
  • Paid Advertising: Paid advertising is any kind of advertising that you have to pay for, versus owned or earned advertising. With paid advertising, marketers pay the owner of ad space in exchange for use of that space.
  • Content Marketing: Content is like a king on the Internet. Without content, visitors do not understand your products and services. Ongoing content provides context and expands on the value that your company can provide.
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Optimizing website content and message to assist search engines in understanding your customers, location, products, and services help your website place on the first few pages of a search engine. Over 90% of search visits come from the first 2 pages of search results.
  • Social Media: Social media although relatively new is totally integrated into our communication patterns and is a critical method of sharing and promoting businesses.
  • Sell & Convert: By using some or even all the above methods we can sell the products or services to people by converting them as our customers.

6. Personal Branding: MassTrust Blueprint

A personal brand is how you promote yourself. It is the unique combination of skills, experience, and personality that you want the world to see you.

The best known will always beat the best. People want to hear from people, not from brands. For example, Elon Musk has a bigger following than SpaceX and Tesla.

  • Downside: A personal brand cannot be invested in and it cannot be sold.
  • Upside: A personal brand can give rise to many brands from his/her influence.

A personal brand becomes an influencer and a brand ambassador for the companies that they run.

MassTrust Blueprint:

  • Learn: Learn a new skill through concepts, facts and procedures. Understand the concepts, remember the facts and practice the procedures.
  • Work: Put your new-found skills to work. Go from practice to implementation. Implementing it in the real world will give you a better understanding.

( Work = Job / Freelancing / Own Projects )

  • Blog: Write about what you have learnt and experienced through your work. When you write, you understand it better. Along with that, you will also start building your personal brand.
  • Consult: Now that you have a personal brand through your blog, have work experience and have learnt the fundamentals. After that start consulting other businesses instead of working for them.
  • Mentor: Mentor others who want to become like you. Mentoring will help you scale your understanding to a whole new level.
  • Startup: Start your own product or service business with the understanding that you have developed about the market, the problem and your own skills.

I would like to say that there are many more ways to know marketing, but the above steps are the essential steps to understand marketing easily.

I hope this article was helpful to you to understand the essentials of marketing.
